      Critics Consensus

Bathed in opulent black and white with a reptilian Andrew Scott holding the screen hostage, Steven Zaillian's sumptuous reinterpretation of Ripley draws fresh blood from Patricia Highsmith's insidious social climber.

Kshitij S Needs lot of patience. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Pablo H I found this riveting from beginning to end. Andrew Scott is so great as Ripley-enigmatic, sinister and vulnerable all at the same time! Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Audience Member I’d give it less than one star if I could! Slow, boring with incredibly poor writing…are all the characters completely stupid. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review David B Grown up TV…all others won’t enjoy it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Ken B Absolutely incredibly unique interpretation on the "Ripley" character and his story. This production was grounded as much in the sounds as the visual. Maybe more. The creaks, and clanking of metal, the sound of footfall on wood or marble, the ever present slosh of water from the deep, or the groaning of a boat or a ship, as if Tom felt like he might slip under at any time. This Tom is not going around thinking he is smarter than everyone else. This Tom Ripley is almost crushed by all the weight of the shifting world around him. At almost every turn, some statue is pointing a direction, or staring down at him, watching him from around a corner... He becomes more and more isolated as the world around him crowds him out. Of course it's slow going if you don't sense all this undercurrent visual and aural activity! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Although it took a while to get the ball rolling, I couldn’t stop watching once the story got going. I was torn between wanting Riley to get caught or get away and the tension between all of the main characters was excellent. Sam Adams Slate The series, written and directed by Steven Zaillian, is a version of the story for a time when even the objectively wealthy feel insecure because their fortunes pale beside the highly visible lifestyles of the ultrarich. Apr 15, 2024 Full Review Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic Shot in striking black and white -- it’s the most beautiful series I’ve ever seen on the platform -- it is emotionally spare, deliberate in its pacing, and morbidly funny. Apr 15, 2024 Full Review Lauren Coates Chicago Reader Interesting aesthetic choices aren’t enough to offset how miscast the abundantly talented Scott is as Mr. Ripley. Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Kaleena Rivera Pajiba Savor it the way that Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) relishes the Caravaggio paintings displayed among each of the glorious Italian locales he absconds to. Apr 15, 2024 Full Review James Croot While some may debate the merits of expanding an already slow-burning thriller to more than five-times the length of Anthony Minghella’s very late 20th century masterpiece, there’s no doubting the aesthetic qualities and commitment to craft. Apr 14, 2024 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Tantalizing & tension-filled, Steven Zaillian's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novels proves 'Everything old is new again...' as cinematographer Robert Elswit gives an artistically stunning, noir essence to Highsmith's murky, malevolent story.
